Select Neutral

in ZOE Z.E.50/E-Tech 2019-Present

I have had my 2021 Zoe for 5 months now and until yesterday I had no issues.

Normally when I go to start it I do the followinng

1 Foot on foot brake and I don't take it off until I am ready to move.

2 Press start button

3 Wait for the checks to complete and the OK message to appear.

4 Select a gear and drive off.

However since yesterday when I try to select a gear either forward or reverse I get the red error message "Select Neutral"

Selecting Neutral then a gear just makes the message come back.

There is no way of moving the car.

Switching off leaving and doing nothing for a minute does not help.

However if I switch off, leave the car till it locks then open it and try again all is OK.

It does not happen every time but over the last couple of days it has happened several times.

Any ideas?

Dave - is it possible that either you have a door still open or perhaps that the car thinks you have a door open ? I have a vague recollection of having seen that reaction from the car when I tried to turn it on to move it a very short distance when the door was still ajar.

Thanks now you have got me thinking as I also sometimes get a message about rear windows being unlocked when they appeasr to be be closed OK.

Going to check out the rear windows.

I have twice had same result. Had to get out , close the door and walk away till locked. Then open again,,,,fault cleared . Tony

Yes this works for me as well. It was doing it a fair bit a couple of weeks ago but has not done it since "fingers crossed!"

It happened with me during a period of exceptionally wet weather.

I guess it has a fault somewhere, I presume it is still under warranty. So best take it to a dealer, they will check the car for fault codes to see what is causing the problem. The only thing maybe to see if its possible to reboot the ECU that may clear the fault but if whatever is causing the issue is still their then the fault will return. But you must still be under warranty so don't mess take it to a dealer. Richy

Thanks for the advice. My nearest Renault dealer is a 130 mile round trip.

Its been very wet here, though I have not gone through any deep floods there has been a lot of surface water lying on the roads and I am hope that it might just be that water has got in somewhere and will dry out.

That is very interesting, short story I once had a car that had an intermittent fault where the boot would not open by the boot switch inside and outside the car. After lots of complaints and numerous parts being replaced including swiches and ECU's ultimately the root cause was diagnosed as a door lock fault caused by water ingress. Once replaced the fault never re-occurred. So in this instance the ECU with a fault in a door lock would inhibit operation of the boot switch presumably so the inconvenience caused would force the owner to take the car to a dealer to get the real fault repaired. The fault was found by the manufacturers field engineer plugging in a code reader and reading the fault codes where the door lock fault was identified.

So my advice is see if someone locally has a code reader that will read the Renault Zoe fault codes and take it from their. Richy

Found (by accident) what is causing the "Select Neutral" issue.

Its a software issue. If the driver's door is not fully shut (on 1st position) it generates this error message. Fully closing the door cancels the error.

Strange with the passenger door it gives a message about the door not being properly closed.
