The New Renault 5 E-Tech Electric pays homage to its glorious past whilst maintaining modernity. It is built on the new AmpR small car platform, offering fantastic handling and new technology.
The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric takes design elements from the original Renault 5, Supercinq and Renault 5 Turbo for a perfect retro-modern blend. The lighting signature is unique to the Renault range, featuring rectangular LED daytime running lights and playful headlamps. The original 5 had a vent on the bonnet to release heat from the engine. This feature has been adapted and modernised to the present day, replaced with a stylish charging indicator, resembling the 5 logo.
18-inch wheels are standard across the range, with unique alloy designs. There are five body colours available from the launch, including Pop Yellow and Pop Green, which are inspired by two iconic shades that were present in the 1970s. From a distance, the paintwork looks solid but looking up close you’ll notice a subtle sparkle, a nod to the pop art aesthetic.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Stepping inside, the retro-modern theme continues. Some design elements are taken from the original R5, such as the padded passenger-side dashboard. The upholstery is made from recycled materials and is offered in a range of colour and styling options to reflect your personality
TECHNOLOGY
Renault 5 E-Tech Electric features dual 10-inch screens, split into the driver instrument panel and multimedia display. It’s powered by Renault’s latest OpenR Link system with Google integration on Techno and Iconic Five trim levels.
STORAGE
Small on the outside and big on the inside, R5’s AmpR platform offers a generous amount of storage. There is 326 litres of boot capacity, which is best in class for an electric city car. Throughout the cabin, there is 19 litres of storage space which can be configured using 3D printed accessories. There’s also a quintessentially French baguette holder!
DRIVING & PERFORMANCE
R5’s platform also offers next-level performance and driving experience, on par with its design. Its optimised front suspension, short gear ratio and tight turning circle of 10.3m offer unrivalled agility.
The choice is yours when it comes to range, with two battery options. There is a 40kWh version offering up to 186 miles (WLTP) range, or a 52kwh pack with a range of up to 248 miles (WLTP). The battery is equipped with liquid cooling to regulate its temperature, extending its battery life. Charging of the R5 can also be optimised using pre-conditioning thanks to Google Maps. The motor is available with two power ratings: 90kW (120hp) or 110kW (150hp).Â
CHARGING
For DC fast charging, the 110kW powertrain has a 100 kW DC socket to charge the 52 kWh battery. The 90 kW powertrain is equipped with an 80 kW DC socket to charge the 40 kWh battery. In both cases, it will take just 30 minutes to charge the battery from 15% to 80%. R5 is the first car in the Renault range to offer bidirectional charging. You can use its Vehicle to Load feature to power conventional three-pin appliances which is perfect for camping trips. It is also possible to use Vehicle to Grid functionality, giving you the capability to sell energy back to the grid at peak times.
SAFETY
Renault 5 E-Tech electric features a range of driver assistance systems (ADAS), on a par with the best in the next segment up, in terms of driving, safety and parking. Alongside the driver attention monitoring system, it has four safety ADAS features seen on Scenic E-Tech electric, but not present in the B segment before now, and which go beyond the requirements of the new GSR II (General Safety Regulation II): automatic emergency braking in reverse, front sensors with emergency lane keeping, rear sensors with emergency lane keeping and rear occupant safe passenger exit.
